Tahitian pearls
Naturally dark and unique pearls
Tahitian pearls are known for their dark and deep hues. They are one of the few types of pearls that are naturally dark without any dyeing, making them exceptional in their own right in the pearl world.
Despite their name, Tahitian pearls do not come exclusively from the island of Tahiti. They originate from French Polynesia, where pearl farming takes place on several islands and lagoons. However, Tahiti is the established name for this type of pearl.
These pearls are grown in the black-lipped oyster (Pinctada margaritifera), whose pigment gives the pearls their characteristic dark base color.
This page is intended to describe specifically cultured Tahitian pearls.
Size and shape
Tahitian pearls are usually around 8–14 mm in size, but larger ones have occasionally been found.
They are on average larger than Akoya pearls, but often slightly smaller than the largest South Sea pearls.
Tahitian pearls can be shaped as:
- round
- semicircular
- baroque
- teardrop-shaped
Baroque shapes are quite typical of Tahitian pearls and are valued for their unique appearance.
Colors of Tahitian pearls
Tahitian pearls are not usually completely black. Their true charm lies in the wide range of shades and hues.
Common shades include gray, coal black, greenish, bluish, aubergine, and peacock (shades of green and purple).
The subtle variation in these tones makes each Tahitian pearl unique!
Gloss and surface
Good quality Tahitian pearls are known for their beautiful luster, which can be metallic, deep and multidimensional.
The combination of luster and hue gives these gems their recognizable, slightly mystical appearance.
What makes Tahitian pearls valuable?
The value of Tahitian pearls is influenced by hue and overtones, luster, size, surface quality, shape, and evenness of color.
Pearls with a strong “peacock” hue and good roundness and luster are particularly prized.
Tahitian pearls in jewelry
Tahitian pearls are especially suitable for those who want something different, dark and striking shades and a modern and bold look.
They are often used in statement necklaces, statement earrings, and modern, personalized jewelry designs.
