South Sea
Large and rare pearls
South Sea pearls are among the most prestigious and largest cultured pearls in the world, known for their impressive size, soft glow and luxurious appearance.
Unlike the smaller Akoya pearls, these are grown in large sea mussels (Pinctada maxima), which allows for the formation of significantly larger pearls. This species of mussel is one of the largest mussels used in pearl farming.
Size and rarity are significant reasons for their high value. Large, round, and good quality South Sea pearls are clearly rarer than smaller pearl types.
This page is intended to describe specifically cultured South Sea pearls.
Origin and growing areas
South Sea pearls are mainly grown in Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
The warm and clean seawaters of these areas provide suitable conditions for mussels and the slow growth of pearls.
The cultivation period is usually longer than for many other pearls. The pearl is allowed to grow for several years, allowing a thick layer of nacre to form. This directly affects the durability of the pearl and its deep, soft glow.
South Sea pearl size
South Sea pearls are usually around 9–15 mm in diameter, but sometimes even larger.
Even a 12 mm South Sea pearl is considerably larger than an Akoya pearl. The larger size increases the pearl's appeal and makes it a definite eye-catcher in jewelry!
South Sea pearl colors
Known in particular for two main color groups:
White | A captivating deep white with a silver undertone and a soft, satiny glow.
Golden | A naturally golden hue that ranges widely from light to deep gold. This color is particularly prized and rare!
Unlike many other types of pearls, the color of South Sea pearls is usually natural and does not require dyeing.
Gloss and surface
The luster of South Sea pearls is often softer, deeper and more “satin” than other pearls, compared to the sharp mirror luster of Akoya pearls.
This is especially due to the thick layer of nacre, which gives the pearl a deep and peaceful glow.
What makes South Sea pearls special?
The value of South Sea pearls is influenced by their large size, thick nacre layer, long cultivation period, natural (rare) colors, and limited availability.
These factors make South Sea pearls among the most luxurious options in the pearl world.
South Sea pearls in jewelry
South Sea pearls are often used as individual pendants, in showy earrings or in luxury pearl necklaces.
They are especially suitable for those who want larger pearls, a soft and luxurious glow, and a timeless, precious look.
